Mothers

Sweater, n.: garment worn by child when its mother is feeling chilly.
~Ambrose Bierce

Ha! After the cold weather post, I couldn't resist starting the Mother's Day post with this quote. It got me thinking about all the colds we've avoided, thanks to mismatched stocking caps thrust on our heads, and that extra blanket that was put on us during a curled-up couch nap. Moms are amazing...and Jeff and I have been blessed with the best.

Colleen, you're the best naptime-blanket-covering, "Ooh, he must be cold--where's his coat?" nurturer there is. Your house is warm, partly because of the thermostat that's always acting up, but mostly because you care so deeply for your family.

Joan, you're the best snuggle-the-baby-on-your-chest (even though you're dying of heatstroke), "Did someone put another log on the fire?" mama there is. Your house is warm because someone DID stock the fire, but also because your love for family oozes out of your pores, much like sweat. :)

And our moms had to learn it from somewhere. Jeff and I have been blessed to know our grandmas: G'ma Bonnie, G'ma Dorothy, G'ma Caroline, and G'ma Trudy. What sweet ladies. How blessed we are to have them in our lives and memories.

And, those two sweet children at the top of this post are MINE. (Well, Jeff's too, but we're talking about MOMS in this post). And, I suppose they've just been given to me on loan, but I really don't think I could've requested any sweeter ones. I just look at that picture and think...Gracie looks nice and warm in that vest, but Josh must be cold with his little neck sticking out of his shirt like that...

Blessed. :)

Still Wearing Jackets...

Up until TODAY, we've been donning jackets when going outside. This has been the wettest, coldest spring that we can remember! (We need to ask G'pa Harvey how many inches of precipitation we've gotten--we are sure he would know--and we're sure we've hit some sort of record!) Suddenly today--MAY!--I found myself turning on the car's air conditioner on the way home from work. I never thought I'd see the day... We are so excited to abandon these sleeves! C'mon, weather!

Our Easter Miracle

For thirty-five months of her life, she's wanted nothing to do with it.

Then, one predestined evening before Easter Sunday--a month before her 3rd birthday--as she's scrambling for her diaper after bathtime, I suggest (for the 112th time) that perhaps she try sitting on the potty instead. But unlike the previous 111 times I'd suggested, this time she looks back at me and replies, "Okay, Mom. But I'm going to need my privacy." With a head nod accompanying this phrase, she bounces through the bathroom door, closes it completely, and opens it--mere seconds later--with a job well-done.

It's been two weeks since our Easter potty miracle, and Gracie's added to her repertoire a SECOND type of job in the bathroom, AND learning how to potty outside, thanks to her trusty and talented buddy, Brooklyn. We now live in a world of pull-ups, M&M potty treats, and Dora or Hello Kitty undies. What a sweet world it is. :)
