Our rough week was sandwiched between goodness: Kai decided on MSHS! Grace drove away on her own after getting her license, my thumb was bruised pretty badly...
...and our dear Granny passed away.
They called on Wednesday that they think she had a stroke after breakfast. Colleen and Scott hustled across the street, and paramedics came to take her to the hospital. She saw Colleen and asked how Scott was doing after surgery...and once she got to the hospital she was unresponsive. Since Scott was still recovering from his knee replacement, Drew & Jeff went right to the hospital. I took off work and met them, and family came and went all day.
They said at the hospital that within 24 hours after a stroke we'd be able to tell what the future would hold. Right at 24 hours, she quietly passed as Jeff and Drew sat beside her in her hospital bed. While we were just starting the path of missing her from here on, we were relieved that she didn't have to continue to struggle in the next chapter. And those Lochheads, they gathered to reflect, miss, and mourn together.
| [Prayer chain] Dorothy Lochhead |
| This message was sent by Jamie Fiorino. As I left church after Little Theology on Wednesday, I was praying for Dorothy Lochhead and her family. I thought of this passage from Proverbs 31: "She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. Her children stand and bless her." And when I got home, there was a rainbow in the sky—the sign of new life and the surety of God's promises. In her baptism, Dorothy was sealed in the protection and promises of the Holy Spirit. And yesterday morning, her baptism was made complete as she took her last breath and transitioned from here to our eternal home. Clothed in strength and dignity to the end, Dorothy was the matriarch of a large and loving family who now walk the line between grief and joy. It is a terrible day of loss and sadness, but a beautiful day in heaven. Her family—three generations—stand to bless her and kneel in prayer for the love they've lost. We will celebrate her life on July 6, time to be decided. In the meantime, let us pray. God of all the years, How beautiful is your name. How strong is your might. How wide your grace. We give thanks that you gave the world the gift of Dorothy Lochhead for 91 years—her kindness and friendship, wisdom and clarity, nurturing spirit and humor. She is missed already. We know she is no longer in pain, her body having worked so hard, but rather she is at rest with you. Her heart, grieved and broken since Harvey's death, is free once more. Her smile, so wide and confident, shines on in our memories. Give comfort and peace to those who love her. Give her family energy and wisdom for these final decisions. And thank you for giving us your son, Jesus, to whom Dorothy now unceasingly worships. Amen. |
