Zion National Park--Riverside Walk to the Narrows

We got up nice and early this morning to experience our first day in Zion.  It was over an hour to the park from St. George, so the early morning helped us get there before it got TOO hot...over 100 degrees, folks!  Yowsa!

The shuttle is the only transportation in the heart of the park, so we hitched a ride up to the last stop:  Temple of Sinawa.  Josh was not a fan of our seat, because the shuttle car right in front of us had a picture of a TARANTULA on it...Jeff TRIED to follow the rules of no appendages or CAMERAS out the window (evidence of his rebelliousness seen above)...and we met a couple from Green Bay, Wisconsin, who were about to brave Angel's Landing.  She was nervous, he was downplaying how technical it was, and at their stop, the recorded tour guide's voice said, "Be careful...people have been known to DIE on this trail."  Hilarious.

A sweet brother moment:  holding hands.

The paved trail begins!  Riverside Walk!

And this is where the sidewalk ended!  After a quick lunch, we set out to get WET SHOES!

We wanted to make it to the end of the trail, but after 1 1/2 hours in, another hiker said it went up at least another couple of hours.  Little Lochheads wouldn't make it that far.  Instead we broke Micah out of the pack for a little stretch before we turned around for home.

Gracie took a little "swim" before we headed back, too.

In our family, good hikers earn ICE CREAM.  And the beloved stuffed animals from the Zion Lodge, as promised.  A raccoon and a cougar have joined our zoo.

Dad couldn't lay down on the grass without a good wrestle.  Back to St. George, then...dinner on the patio, a swim, and then to bed!  This was the night that we watched, "The Way," written and produced by Emilio Estevez.  This was recommended to us by a hiker in Denver--about a father backpacking in Europe in memory of his son...we liked it!
